OWNER + OPERATOR
Having grown up with entrepreneurial parents, Clare felt the drive from a young age to open and operate her own business. While completing her degree in Interior Design at the University of Kentucky, Clare took an internship with Lexington Furniture. The owner, Hugh James, took note of Clare’s passion and budding talent for great design. She continued working at the store, and the two soon identified a niche they had an interest in tackling. “Hugh and I both had a desire to create a brand that would fulfill Lexington’s need for a modern, well-curated home décor and accessories brand,” she explained. “As a business partner, he trusted in my abilities and gave me free reign to create the Market on National brand.”
For Clare, a major goal for the company was to serve customers with a professional, informed approach.
ASSISTANT STORE MANAGER
Michelle started her career in design in 2015 as an intern at Market on National a few weeks after Clare opened up shop on National Ave. After graduating with a degree in Interior Design at the University of Kentucky, Michelle accepted a position at Market on National. Michelle’s love of design grew from her natural love of art. “I’d live in an art museum if I could. As a teenager, I took advantage of living so close to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. I was in a different art museum every weekend. I think that’s why I love interior design so much because it’s a marriage between art and environment.” Market on National allows Michelle to exercise her design muscle while also exploring her love of business. “I love working with and FOR people. It’s fun being able to assist in operating a local business. I feel very fortunate to be in my position.”
